Kinja'd!!!

I stumbled upon this '86 911 Targa with 129k miles at a local small-scale dealer. I talked to the guy and he says the heat and a/c are both not working, and it's in the shop for some other stuff. Going to be a couple weeks before it's ready. But...whale tail and body colored Fuchs wheels!

More pics...

I love the Targa, but the whale tail and body colored Fuchs are pretty meh. I much prefer no spoiler or a ducktail (screw originality!) along with the normal Fuchs.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the price?

Everyone keeps talking about the "air cooled 911 bubble" because prices have been going up so fast.

I think that makes it a good time to buy. The bubble isn't going to pop yet.

You'll know the bubble is about to pop when everyone stops talking about the bubble and your average non-gearhead Joe starts buying air cooled 911s as an investment. I don't think we're anywhere close to that yet. Classic regular 911s are still being purchased mostly by people who want to drive them. It's only the rare models that are being purchased as investments and not driven.

It's unbelievable how quickly the values have gone up over the last 2 years. You used to be able to find decent drivers for around 10k, now it's closer to 20k for anything worth buying.

And you used to be able to get a 964 RS America for around $30K a few years ago and now it's $60K!

I think the prices will continue to rise for a while for a few reasons:

1. The classic cars are engaging in a way that newer cars aren't. They're such a pain in the ass that they're charming. My Dad has an '82 911 SC and it feels like a car from 1962. Cause it kind of is, lol. Newer sports cars are way faster but they're more insulated from the road and you can't even approach their limits on public roads.

2. $20K is still not a ton of money. There a lot of people who can afford to spend that much on a classic car.

3. There aren't really any cheaper alternatives when it comes to air cooled 911s. The ones from the 60s and 70s are generally more expensive. RWD 964s are more expensive. 993s are way more expensive.

There is no bubble. With the introduction of electronic steering, and other nannies people are realizing there's only so many real drivers cars left. Air cooled porsches being one of them. A good original is only going to go UP in value.

Yeah, I agree, they're pretty unlikely to lose much value as long as you buy them for a good price and don't mess them up. And actually here in Madison there are two particularly excellent Porsche shops: Kelly Moss Motorsports , and Accumoto .

I'd probably take the car to one of these places to see what kind of work it needs to get the HVAC working again, before making any moves on it.

Agreed, prices are still nowhere near their peak and will continue to rise. While I can afford it, I find 20k hard to stomach since a) I could have had one for 10k a few years ago and b) there are much better performing cars out there for that money.

Forget the pre-74 long hoods... As good as they look, the premium they command over the SC and 3.2 is absurd.

Haha I think about issues A and B all the time with all sorts of cars.

First I get mad that I didn't buy them before prices spiked. Then I get mad that I can buy a better performing car for the same money.

Then the prices go up more and I hate myself.

The problem is that unless you already own what you consider to be your attainable "dream" car then it's hard to spend money on a classic car. I think we all want a somewhat modern car that performs really well compared to recent cars. And we all aspire to have the most expensive car we can possibly have if we work hard and save and stretch the budget. It's just human nature to want the best thing you can possibly afford. That's why everyone usually spends too much on their condo/house and is stressed out the first few years of ownership until they start making more money and have an easier time affording the payment.

I love my cars but don't have a dream car yet that I would drive around a lot. Once I do I'll be able to buy classic cars for the weekends and as an investment without caring if they're not fast by today's standards.

Put those wheels back to black!

I would certainly buy it if the heat and AC were fixed. You can do better on the price if they are still broken.

I love the whale tail/Targa combo. L.O.V.E.

Definitely get it inspected before you buy one. Engine rebuilds are expensive, and required more often on air cooled pcars.

If that's after the work they're doing, that could be a pretty good price. Is that Madison, WI?

What, you want me to tell you where it is so yo can buy it for yourself? You think I'm nuts? Just kidding yeah it's Madison, I've mentioned where I live on oppo enough times that it wouldn't take much digging to figure out anyay haha.

The impression I got from my conversation with the guy yesterday is the car is in the shop to have some stuff like oil leaks fixed. But not necessarily the HVAC. He also has a Boxster S that I might go check out today so can get some clarification on what exactly is being fixed on the targa.

Oh no, I've done that on my own. I spent most of last summer looking for one, before deciding street parking in a college town wasn't the best place for one to live. Now, with a wedding coming up I can't quite afford one :(

And I live on the East Coast. I may've considered telling a friend in the area to go test drive it though...
